Hi, I’m Derek and I’m a professional photographer from Ayrshire. My passion for photography and arts grew from a young age. I have been in business since 2019 and have photographed around 40 amazing weddings to date, but my photography continues to grow. I was listed among the UK Top 20 Wedding Photographers by Wedding and Honeymoon Magazine and have also been recognised at the Icon WPPI Silver awards (print competition), been featured on six magazine covers, and in countless publications.
What aspects of wedding photography do you wish more people knew about?
That when looking for your wedding photographer, it doesn’t matter if they have shot at the venue before or not. It’s how they are going to be able to tell your story through a vision and be able to figure out the best lighting as well as being able to adapt in forever changing lighting. Also, that you only get one chance, with limited time – it’s a massive responsibility.
How many weddings do you photograph per year?
I have successfully done around 40 weddings since starting my business in 2019. My goal is to do around 30 weddings per year.
Why do you love what you do?
I love getting to be in the moment with my clients, sharing a tear and laughter. Also, for the privilege of recording these special moments and having my work on their wall. There is no better feeling. What better job is there than getting to spend time with people and create and capture memories, while also growing and having opportunities within the wedding industry?
Derek’s Tribute
Last year was one of the best years for my business, both in growth and in building new connections. Challenges at the end of the year were nothing compared to the beginning of 2025, which has seen devastation and loss in my personal life; losing my mum so suddenly on 7th January.
