Mobility Matters

A Legacy of Care and Independence in Ayrshire

In the heart of Ayrshire, Mobility Matters, a family-run business owned by Robert Frew, is redefining what it means to support mobility and independence. Since its establishment in 2016, this locally cherished business has become Ayrshire’s largest independent stockist of scooters, furniture, and daily living aids. For Robert and his team, it’s not just about selling products — it’s about empowering people.

“Mobility Matters isn’t about selling volume,” explains Robert. “It’s about selling a service.”

After years as a sales manager and engineer specialising in wheelchairs, as well as working with Scotland’s Access to Work scheme, Robert returned from the United States with a vision to help those with mobility challenges lead independent lives. Encouraged by his father, a seasoned retailer, Robert embraced the ethos of prioritising people, an approach that has clearly resonated with customers across Ayrshire and beyond.

Growing from Humble Beginnings
The journey began in Stewarton, a charming town near Kilmarnock, where the first Mobility Matters store opened its doors. The reception was overwhelmingly positive, but the business’s defining moment came just a year later when South Ayrshire Council approached Robert with a unique challenge: to take over a struggling mobility shop in Ayr that had left many customers dissatisfied. Undaunted, Robert embraced the opportunity and turned the Ayr location into a thriving part of his expanding enterprise.

In recent years, Mobility Matters has grown to include a store on Portland Street in Kilmarnock, another in Irvine, and a specialist shop in Kilmarnock dedicated exclusively to reclining chairs and adjustable beds, aptly named Robert’s Recliners. Each location reflects the company’s unwavering commitment to providing personalised service and expert guidance.

Putting People First: A Guiding Principle
The team at Mobility Matters takes pride in helping customers make informed decisions, ensuring each product is tailored to individual needs and circumstances.

For customers navigating the complexities of mobility aids, this personalised approach is invaluable. Whether it’s a first-time buyer exploring scooters or a long-time user seeking a more comfortable recliner, the team offers a wealth of knowledge and compassion. “We’re here to provide advice and guidance so our customers can make the best decisions for their unique situations,” Robert says.

Expertise Beyond the Showroom
Mobility Matters doesn’t stop at the point of sale. The company employs fully trained, experienced engineers who cover Ayrshire and Glasgow, offering on-site repairs and servicing for scooters, wheelchairs, and even stairlifts. The convenience of at-home service ensures minimal disruption for customers, an essential feature for those with limited mobility.

“Our goal is to make the experience as seamless as possible,” Robert explains. “For many customers, their scooter or wheelchair is a lifeline. By providing on-site servicing, we help maintain their independence with minimal inconvenience.”

Additionally, the company offers home demonstrations for most products. This service is particularly valuable for customers needing to evaluate how a scooter or powered wheelchair will perform in their home or local environment. “Trying a scooter in a showroom is one thing, but trying it in your own space is entirely different,” says Robert. “That’s why we’re happy to bring the product to you.”

Unmatched Variety and Value
With over 50 recliners across three locations, starting from as little as £600, Mobility Matters offers a range of options to suit diverse needs and budgets. From compact and affordable models to luxurious, fully adjustable recliners, customers can find solutions that enhance comfort and accessibility.

This extensive selection reflects Robert’s commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that everyone, regardless of financial circumstances, can access quality mobility products.

Building a Legacy of Trust
Over the years, Mobility Matters has become a trusted name in Ayrshire and beyond, not just for the quality of its products but for the relationships it fosters. Customers are greeted by a knowledgeable and friendly team who take the time to listen, understand, and deliver solutions tailored to individual needs.

As a family-run business, Mobility Matters embodies a level of care and integrity that larger chains often struggle to replicate. Robert’s vision of a customer-first approach, combined with his deep expertise, has built a reputation for excellence that continues to draw new and loyal customers alike.

The Road Ahead
Looking to the future, Robert remains focused on expanding services and reaching even more people in need of mobility solutions. With plans to enhance the company’s engineering and servicing capabilities, Mobility Matters is poised to remain a cornerstone of Ayrshire’s mobility landscape.

For anyone in need of mobility products or advice, the message from Mobility Matters is clear: “Feel free to contact us or visit one of our stores. Our friendly team is always happy to answer questions and help you find the perfect solution for your needs.”

Thanks to Robert Frew and his dedicated team, countless individuals across Ayrshire are living with greater independence and dignity. Indeed, at Mobility Matters, every day is a testament to the transformative power of putting people first.
