Scottish model, Gillian Cheung

You might feel like you’ve seen Gillian’s face somewhere before and the chances are that you probably have. Perhaps you’ll recognise her from the TV adverts she’s appeared in or maybe you’ve noticed her on billboards or buses during your commute. You might have seen her on the covers of magazines or newspapers or spotted her on the catwalk at fashion shows. Over the last two decades, she has become synonymous with the Scottish bridal industry, so if you’ve ever read a wedding magazine or attended a wedding show, then you’ll be familiar with Gillian.

So, Gillian, can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Hi, I’m Gillian Cheung, a professional freelance model. I live in Newton Mearns with my husband and our two wonderful children. I’ve been modelling for around 20 years and feel very lucky to have a job that I love. I have a degree in Psychology and Sociology. After university, I lived in Toronto for a while, and I’ve travelled to lots of incredible places across Asia, Africa, America and Europe.

What was your favourite aspect of working on this shoot?
I was excited to work on this amazing shoot. Ayrshire is a special place for me; it holds cherished childhood memories, and as an adult, I’ve had great experiences modelling for numerous Ayrshire businesses.

When I discovered the theme for this issue was romance, particularly pertaining to Burns, I felt this was a perfect fit. I’ve long been a fan and won many Burns competitions as a child. Even throughout my twenties, I continued to sing at Burns Suppers, performing my best renditions of ‘Rantin’ Rovin’ Robin’, ‘Duncan Gray’ and my favourite, ‘Ca’ The Yowes’.

I’m a proud Scot, so I loved having the opportunity to adorn myself in tartan and model amidst the iconic Burns landscape of Brig O’Doon. We had some stormy weather on the day of our shoot but like a true Scot, I wasn’t going to let a bit of wind and rain get me down!

What do you enjoy modelling the most?
Bridal modelling is probably what I am best known for and I feel very fortunate to achieve continued success in this sector.

I also enjoy the fast-paced buzz of e-commerce shoots where there are huge amounts of clothing to shoot in one day.

I adore being on the catwalk, it’s really special to bring clothes to life, show the movement of the garments and see the reactions of the audience.

There isn’t really much I haven’t modelled at this stage – ladies fashion to jewellery, bridal gowns to knitwear, swimwear to winter coats, hats to socks and just about everything in between. I love it all, my job is my passion and I take great pride in my work.
