Troon to Irvine – A classic summer coastal walk
This 6 mile/9km route is the ideal introduction to the Ayrshire Coastal Path thanks to its mostly flat terrain, easy navigation and almost continuous sea views. Linking two classic coastal towns, the walk combines wide sandy beaches, rolling dunes, a wildlife-rich estuary and fascinating maritime heritage into one relaxed day out.
Troon grew from a small fishing village into an important harbour town during the 19th century and is now internationally recognised for its famous golf courses and bustling marina. At the other end of the route, Irvine was once one of Scotland’s most significant medieval ports, with a rich shipbuilding and maritime history still visible around the harbour today. Between the two is Barassie, where elegant seafront homes overlook the Firth of Clyde towards the Isle of Arran, and a magnificent stretch of golden sand backed by dunes and marram grass provides easy walking all the way to Irvine. You might even take a de-tour to the iconic stone dragon perched high atop the dunes — a favourite local landmark and an excellent viewpoint overlooking the coastline. At the end of the walk, the River Irvine meets the Garnock Estuary – a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest – where you’ll find a surprising amount of wildlife, with seals, otters and a wide variety of birdlife regularly spotted among the mudflats and saltmarshes.
turn-by-turn route description
From Troon Yacht Marina walkout the main exit on to Harbour Road. Turn left and walk along Harbour Road to a roundabout. Continue straight on at the roundabout then almost immediately look out for a grassy embankment on your left which takes you away from the main road for a short distance (signposted for Ayrshire Coastal Path).
At the end of the grassy path you will emerge at a car park. Cross the car park onto the roadside pavement and turn left to walk along the pavement for a short distance before merging onto a cycle path running parallel to the B746/North Shore Road.
Follow the cycle path for 1.4km into Barassie. Where the cycle path takes a right turn towards the train station, continue ahead along the grass.
Beyond the last houses cross a small footbridge over a burn and then head down onto the sandy beach. The next 4.5km is an easy walk along Irvine Beach. Look out for signposted Dunes Path halfway along, if you would like some shelter or to visit Irvine’s stone dragon (recommended!)
When you reach the car park at the north end of the beach, turn right and use the harbourside promenade to walk along Beach Drive – there will be a large car park on your right-hand side and the River Irvine should be on your left. Continue along the promenade to reach Irvine Harbour, where the walk ends.
