THE PERFECT TIME TO REFLECT, RECALIBRATE, AND REALIGN YOUR CONVERSATIONS
Wendy Harris
The end of the year has a funny way of sneaking up on us, doesn’t it? One minute you’re promising yourself a calm December, and the next you’re juggling client deadlines, Secret Santa surprises, and the great debate over whether to buy just one more box of mince pies.
Among all that festive chaos, it’s easy to lose our bearings. That’s when I like to take out what I call my business compass – the quiet tool that helps me check if I’m still heading in the right direction.
For me, it isn’t about spreadsheets, metrics, or colour-coded goals (though I do love a good list). It’s about conversations. Because in business, as in life, the right conversations are what keep us on course.
A few weeks ago, I had a chat with someone who admitted they’d spent most of this year “trying to show up everywhere.” They were posting daily, attending events, joining webinars, networking like a pro but they were exhausted. When I asked why they were doing it, they paused. “I suppose I’m scared I’ll miss something if I don’t,” they said.
That moment stuck with me. Because haven’t we all been there? Chasing opportunities, saying yes to everything, mistaking movement for momentum. It’s so easy to fill our calendars without realising our compass has quietly spun off course.
Taking time to stop, reflect, and recalibrate is one of the best gifts we can give ourselves at this time of year. It’s a chance to ask:
- Which conversations truly mattered this year?
- Who helped me grow, and who did I help in return?
- Where did I drift off track, and what did I learn from it?
- And most importantly: which conversations do I want to have next year?
When we start the year by realigning with purpose, we stop chasing noise and start following direction. The best goals aren’t the ones that look impressive on paper, they’re the ones that feel right in your gut, that align with your values, and that make those daily conversations count.
So as the year winds down and you wrap the last of the presents, take a quiet moment to check your own compass. Not the one that points north, the one that points towards why you started.
Because when your direction is clear, your conversations have purpose, your connections deepen, and the year ahead creates new clarity and confidence.
