Ness Glen Walk, Loch Doon
When winter days grow short and crisp, there’s something magical about heading outdoors for a breath of fresh Ayrshire air. Tucked just outside Dalmellington, Ness Glen is the perfect festive season walk — short enough to enjoy in daylight, yet packed with atmosphere. The narrow, moss-clad gorge feels like a hidden world, where the infant River Doon tumbles past icy rocks and the low sun filters through the trees. It’s a place where children’s imaginations run wild and grown-ups can’t help but stop and listen to the rush of water echoing through the glen.
This scenic route begins on the shores of Loch Doon and follows the river through the dramatic gorge before looping back via woodland tracks — a great choice for a Boxing Day family adventure or a peaceful solo escape.
For those looking to stretch their legs further, the walk can be extended into a full-day outing starting in Dalmellington and taking in the spectacular Dalcairney Falls, another local gem where twin cascades plunge into deep rock pools.
- From the Roundhouse, head NW along the road towards the dam and before crossing the bridge, go down a set of steps on your left-hand side.
- Turn right at the bottom of the steps and keep right at a fork to follow the footpath through the glen with the river on your right.
- After 0.8 miles (1.3 km) you will reach a suspension bridge. Walk beneath the bridge then turn left (W) to pick up a footpath heading uphill (N).
- Follow this path through woodland. After 0.2 miles (400m) keep left at a fork.
- A further half mile (1.1 km) along, after a steep downhill section, the path arrives back at the fork beneath the dam. Turn right, through the kissing gate and then up the steps (or turn right to avoid these).
- Turn right to walk along the road a short distance to return to the Roundhouse Cafe.
