Every long-standing family business begins somewhere — with an idea, an ambition and someone willing to turn it into reality. For J. Pieroni & Sons, that story began in Ayr in 1943. More than 80 years later, what started with one generation has grown into a much-loved local business, now proudly carried forward by the third.
Founded by Joseph Pieroni and later taken over by his sons Derek and Duncan in 1970, the business is today run by brothers Mark and Jonathan Pieroni. Through three generations, much has changed, but the principles at its heart remain simple: excellent produce, knowledgeable service and a commitment to doing things properly.
From its home on Peebles Street, J. Pieroni & Sons remains first and foremost a traditional fish merchant. Fresh fish and shellfish are sourced from local fishermen and major Scottish markets, giving customers access to some of the outstanding produce landed around Scotland’s shores.
Being based on the Ayrshire coast places the business particularly close to some of the country’s finest seafood. Depending on the season and availability, the counter can feature locally landed Ayrshire lobster alongside langoustines, oysters, mussels and an ever-changing selection of fresh fish and shellfish. The business also supplies restaurants and catering establishments throughout Ayrshire, with professional chefs relying on the same quality and expertise available to customers in the shop.
But part of thriving for more than eight decades is knowing when to preserve tradition and when to embrace something new.
Today, there is much more to discover on Peebles Street than fish alone. Alongside fresh seafood is a carefully selected range of poultry and seasonal game, while the expanding deli offers specialist cheeses, cold meats, Italian sausages and other favourites.
Closer to home, the family’s own in-house smoked salmon remains a customer favourite, its rich yet delicate flavour having earned multiple awards over the years. A growing selection of homemade food also includes freshly prepared fishcakes, hearty fish pies and traditional Cullen skink — bringing the quality of the fish counter to the table with less preparation at home.
Knowledgeable staff remain an important part of the experience, offering advice on everything from choosing and preparing seafood to portions and cooking methods.
