The Kerr family are fourth and fifth generation dairy farmers and proud owners of South Corton Farm in Ayr. The farm is also home to the successful plant nursery, Corton Plants, as well as The Coo Shed, the ever-popular countryside dining destination.

Their milking herd is, however, very much at the heart of the family business as well as the inspiration behind The Milk Hoose which houses the farm’s fresh milk vending machines.

Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, The Milk Hoose now has nine different vending machines: one bottle, two milk, two syrup, three cake/food, and one coffee. So whether it’s a single bottle of milk you’re after, a flavoured milkshake or a coffee and a tray bake, The Milk Hoose has got just the thing!

Their fresh farm milk, pasteurised on site, is also used in The Coo Shed where breakfast, lunch, snacks and sweet treats are served six days a week. The menu includes everything from sandwiches, wraps, toasties and paninis to favourites such as fish and chips, macaroni cheese and filled baked potatoes.

Everything is cooked from fresh on the premises where the team is proud to serve home cooked, good food. Or, as Alison Kerr puts it: “It’s not fast food, but fresh food served as fast as we can.”

Alison also insists on using local produce in The Coo Shed sourcing first and foremost from Ayrshire, then Scotland, then Great Britain.

Such is the popularity of their home baking, a new extension was added in March 2021 to include a bakery. This is where all of the cakes and tray bakes for both The Coo Shed and the vending machines are made. But did you know you can also order postal tray bakes?

“You can order online and we’ll post to anywhere in the UK,” says Alison. “Order four, six or eight and they’ll arrive wrapped in cow-print paper in a wee box. You can add a personalised message so they make a great gift – udderly delicious!”

The Coo Shed also offers outside catering so if you require food for a party, a celebration or a meeting, Alison and her team are more than happy to cater for the event. All you need to do is eat it!

In addition to the wonderful food and drink offerings, you can also treat yourself to a little something from the plant nursery. Open all year round, Corton Plants is the place to go for bedding plants, hanging baskets, containers, perennials and shrubs. Not forgetting that all-important Christmas wreath when wintertime arrives.

You’ll also find a gift shop in the marquee where you can browse the handbags, scarves, jewellery and other gift ideas.

Having survived the milk crisis in 2015/16 and then the Covid pandemic in 2020/21, the Kerr family is proud to continue almost a century of dairy farming tradition and to continue serving the loyal customers of Corton Plants, The Coo Shed and The Milk Hoose.

Open six days a week (closed Mondays) from 9.30am to 4.30pm (last orders 4pm for hot food), you can find The Coo Shed/Corton Plants at South Corton Farm, Corton Road, Ayr, KA6 6BX.
