Five Tips for Staying Calm Over the Holidays
Fiona Campbell
The festive season is a time for celebration, but it can also feel overwhelming. The pressure of perfect family gatherings, endless to-do lists, and managing different personalities can make it hard to fully relax.
Here are five simple and easy-to-do mindset tips to help you stay calm amid the chaos.
Focus on connection, not perfection
It’s easy to expect that everything must be perfect, but what people remember most is how they feel when they are with you. Try shifting your focus from making things look perfect to being present with your friends and family. Remember laughter, good conversations, and shared experiences are much more important than perfectly wrapped gifts or an immaculate home. This change in focus reduces pressure on you and helps those around you to relax.
Set realistic boundaries
The holiday season, especially in Scotland, comes with an overload of events, commitments, and expectations. Setting boundaries helps you manage this busy time. Before saying ‘yes’ to every invitation or commitment, take a moment to ask yourself what feels right for you. Remember, this is your holiday time too! Prioritise your well-being by allowing yourself to skip a few parties or adjust your plans. Setting limits doesn’t make you any less generous or loving, it simply helps you show up as your best self for the things that matter most.
Practice the power of pause
With so much happening, we often forget to slow down and take a breath. Practicing small ‘pauses’ throughout your day can make a big difference. Make time to pause, breathe deeply, and let go of tension. A few deep breaths help ground you, allowing you to return to what you’re doing with a clearer, more relaxed state of mind.
Create wee moments of joy
Rather than waiting for Christmas Day or Hogmanay to feel festive, create wee moments of joy each day. It could be having a cup of tea, a cheeky prosecco with your pals, or dancing around to some mad Christmas tunes with your kids. These special moments can add a sense of warmth and joy to your daily routine, helping you experience the holiday spirit in a way that feels simple and fun.
Be kind to yourself
Remember that it’s okay if everything doesn’t go as planned. Be gentle with yourself and let go of any self-imposed expectations. The festive time does not have to be perfect to be meaningful. If something doesn’t go as planned, remind yourself that it’s just a small part of the bigger picture. This time of the year is all about love, generosity, and kindness, and that includes being kind to yourself.
By shifting your mindset and embracing these simple tips, you can make space for a festive season that feels both joyful and calm. And the best part? You’ll not only enjoy your time away from your normal routine, but are also more relaxed, positive and fun to be around.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
