Nestled in the heart of Newmilns, Lamlash House stands as a testament to Ayrshire’s rich industrial past. This meticulously restored Category B Listed Victorian property, once a busy branch of The Royal Bank of Scotland and the adjoining home of its Bank Manager, now opens its doors to visitors from near and far, offering an immersive journey through time, tradition, and taste.

Built in 1890, Lamlash House was commissioned by Robert Carmichael Mitchell, Bank Agent and Glasgow businessman, and has long been intertwined with the town’s celebrated lace manufacturing industry. The original owner’s family connection to Joseph Hood—a pioneer in the mechanisation of lace looms—bonds the property’s place in Newmilns’ industrial heritage. After over a decade of careful restoration, Lamlash House is now a venue for dining experiences, intimate weddings, bespoke events, and historical tours that bring the stories of Ayrshire’s past to life.

Since 2006, Lamlash House has been owned by Gordon McDonald and Johnathan Muirhead, who have been instrumental in preserving the house’s historic character while developing it into a unique destination for culture, heritage and tourism. Under their stewardship, the property has remained a private house, opening to the public at select times ensuring that every event and tour retains an exclusive and personal touch. Their commitment has transformed Lamlash House into a centre for local history and hospitality all while respecting the constraints and character of a Category B Listed building.

Recently, Lamlash House played host to international delegates as part of VisitScotland’s prestigious Familiarisation (FAM) visits, a precursor to the flagship Connect 2025 Trade Event in Aberdeen. Delegates from China, the United States, Canada, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, and the Netherlands were welcomed to the house. Here, they experienced first-hand the unique blend of historical charm and modern hospitality that defines Lamlash House.

Guests were treated to a culinary journey featuring locally sourced, high-quality produce—a hallmark that earned Lamlash House the VisitScotland Thistle Award for Best Eating Experience in the West of Scotland in 2023. The luncheons, served in rooms inspired by design icons Charles Rennie Mackintosh and William Morris, were further enlivened by the presence of Victorian parlour maids ‘Annie Currie’ and ‘Mary Goldie’, who provided service reminiscent of the house’s early 20th-century heyday.

Part of Lamlash House’s mission to keep local history alive is the ‘Millers & Merchants’ tour, a collaborative venture with Tasting History Ayrshire Tours and MYB Textiles—Newmilns’ renowned lace manufacturer still using original Victorian Nottingham Lace Looms. The tour is more than a sightseeing trip—it is an animated, interactive journey into the lives of the millers, merchants, and families who shaped Newmilns. Costumed guides share stories from the house’s past, offering insights into the social and economic fabric of Ayrshire’s textile industry.

From its Victorian architecture and period stained-glass to its ongoing celebration of local culinary and culture, Lamlash House offers a window into Ayrshire’s enduring spirit.
