A Mindset Shift for Business & Coaching
Fiona Campbell
When we talk about sustainability, most people think of the planet, and rightly so. But what about your personal sustainability?
In business we are often pouring our energy into helping others grow, solving problems, or chasing goals. It’s rewarding work, but without the right mindset, you can end up running on empty.
That’s where the idea of sustainable energy comes in. It’s about building habits and thinking patterns that allow you to thrive over the long term, not just sprint from one urgent task to the next. Because let’s be honest, burnout doesn’t just sneak up on you, it builds slowly when you ignore the warning signs and keep going because “there’s no time to stop.”
So how do you shift towards a more sustainable approach, one that supports your energy, effectiveness, and wellbeing?
Here are three simple, powerful mindset tips you can start using right away:
Think PACE, not PUSH.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of constantly pushing through, especially when things feel urgent. But sustainable energy comes from working at the right pace for you, not maximum effort all the time. The mindset shift here is: not everything needs to be done today.
At the start of each week, identify the three most important outcomes you want to achieve. Then block time for focused work, and equally important, recovery. Give yourself permission to slow down between sprints. Trust that consistent, steady progress beats last-minute intensity every time.
Value RECOVERY as much as ACTION
Top performers – athletes, musicians, CEOs – build recovery into their routines. In business we often skip this step because it doesn’t feel productive. But sustainable energy relies on regular resets. The mindset shift here is: rest is strategic, not lazy.
Create micro-moments of recovery throughout your day. A five-minute walk. A screen break between calls. A breathing pause before a meeting. These small shifts help reset your nervous system and build energy reserves, rather than constantly draining them.
Coach yourself with COMPASSION
Burnout often stems from the stories you tell yourself: “I should be doing more,” “I can’t say no,” “I don’t have time to rest.” We know that all behaviour comes from a thought and your self-talk is quietly sabotaging your wellbeing. Mindset shift: you don’t need to earn rest, you need it to lead.
Notice your inner dialogue when you’re tired or overwhelmed. Would you speak to a friend, client or team member that way? Probably not. So start coaching yourself with the same compassion.
Acknowledge the pressure, then ask: “What would be the most sustainable next step right now?”
Sustainability isn’t just about reducing waste or cutting carbon, it’s also about creating a life and business that can thrive without burning out. When you work from a place of sustainable energy, you’re more present, more creative, and far more impactful in everything you do.
Be kind to your energy. It’s the fuel that makes everything else possible.
