A Day in the Life of…a Greenkeeper
Kevin Johnston is the Senior Head Greenkeeper at Belleisle Park Golf Course in Ayr, one of Britain’s finest public parkland courses, owned and operated by South Ayrshire Council. Ayrshire Magazine caught up with Kevin for this aptly green-themed issue to find out more about his skilled profession.
When and why did you become a greenkeeper?
I started greenkeeping at Belleisle on the YTS scheme in July 1987. I was looking for something outdoors and the interviews were that day, so I timed it perfectly! I didn’t have much idea what a greenkeeper was at the time but I’m still here 38 years later!
What training did you need to do?
Three years National Certificate – one day a week at college for theory-based work then the rest at the golf course learning practical skills. I also have a HNC in Golf Course Management which I completed at Langside College. This was a two-and-a-half-year course.
What do you like best about being a greenkeeper?
Seeing the golf course in good condition and knowing that you and your team have been responsible for it. Plus, always striving to make improvements wherever we can.
Do you dislike anything about your job?
Not really. Winter can be a chore at times but that’s usually offset with a good summer.
How many hours a week do you usually work?
37 hours per week.
What time does your working day usually start?
I get up at 4.30am and start at 6am in summer months. During winter we go back to a 7am start.
Can you briefly describe what a typical day involves?
We have 36 holes here so that means 36 greens to prepare, plus tees, fairways and rough to cut, and the small matter of around 140 bunkers to rake each day.
One piece of advice for anyone wanting to be a greenkeeper?
We have an assessment centre each year to employ new Modern Apprentices. This is a 12-month course which consists of one day at college and the rest at the golf course. This results in an SVQ Level 2 qualification which is the base line entry into full-time employment. There are advertisements that go out on My Job Scotland that anyone wishing to start a career in greenkeeping can apply for.
What would you be if you weren’t a greenkeeper?
Who knows?! I am a keen artist so probably something along those lines.
Career highlight so far?
I think the continual improvement of the golf course is the thing that gives me the most satisfaction as there is so much work that goes into the upkeep of golf courses. It is always rewarding to see the end results.
If you had to sum up your job in one word, what would it be?
Challenging!
