My Journey Into Photography

Hello, my name is Derek, and I want to share with you the remarkable journey that led me to become a photographer. My story begins in a small mining village in Ayrshire, where life was tough for my family. In was born in 1984, the start of the decline of the local mining industry, which once sustained the community.
Despite the challenges, I always had a creative spark. From a young age, I found solace in art, excelling in drawing and painting. However, photography seemed like a distant dream, reserved for those more financially fortunate. Growing up, I admired the wildlife programmes and the photographers working with David Attenborough, but pursuing such passions felt like chasing after a fleeting breeze.
It wasn’t until my late twenties that I reignited my passion for photography. Fuelled by a desire to break free from the constraints of my upbringing, I took a leap of faith into the world of photography. It was a plunge into the unknown, a journey from what I thought I knew to what I would come to understand.
Despite initial reservations and my own social anxiety, I discovered a natural talent behind the lens. I embraced simplicity, capturing the raw and authentic essence of my subjects. With each photograph, I delved deeper into the ‘why’ behind the image, uncovering stories that begged to be told.
My journey was not without its hurdles. Overcoming social barriers and stepping out of my comfort zone were challenges I faced head-on. But with determination and perseverance, I began to gain recognition for my work, rubbing shoulders with industry giants and mentors like Jerry Ghionis. My efforts were rewarded with a silver at the ICON Awards and a spot in the UK’s Top 20 Wedding Photographer in 2023 as recognised by Weddings & Honeymoons Magazine in 2023.
My journey is a testament to the power of passion, persistence, and belief in one’s dreams. I’m grateful for the path that led me here. From humble beginnings to recognition, my story continues to unfold. Each photograph I take is a step forward on this journey, a testament to my growth and evolution as an artist. Every frame captured is a piece of my story, a reflection of my journey from a small mining village to the world of professional photography. My story is not just about my achievements, but also about the challenges I overcame, the lessons I learned, and the dreams I dared to dream.
